The project is now fully operational, utilizing the Nini West reservoir located 250 kilometers offshore. In its initial commercial phase, the facility expects to store 400,000 tons of CO2 annually, with plans to scale capacity to between 4 and 8 million tons per year. Captured carbon, primarily sourced from Danish biomethane plants, is liquefied and transported via the specialized carrier Carbon Destroyer 1 before being injected 1,800 meters beneath the seabed.
INEOS Launches EU's First Commercial Carbon Storage Site in Denmark
King Frederik X of Denmark officially inaugurated the Greensand project on Friday, marking the European Union's first full-scale carbon capture and storage facility. The site, led by INEOS Energy alongside partners Harbour Energy and the Danish North Sea Fund, aims to sequester industrial emissions within a depleted offshore oil field.

INEOS chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe framed the launch as a vital bridge for European industry, arguing that carbon capture technology allows manufacturers to maintain competitiveness while meeting emission targets. Despite the milestone, Greensand faces competition and regional context from the Northern Lights project in Norway—a non-EU state—which began storing CO2 last year and is currently expanding its capacity to handle at least 5 million tons annually.
