The Senate Judiciary Committee began vetting five of Trump's 11 recently announced judicial picks this week, including Whitney Hermandorfer for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit and four Missouri-based district court candidates: Zachary Bluestone, Joshua Divine, Maria Lanahan, and Cristian Stevens. Advocacy organizations, including Demand Justice and Accountable.US, have mobilized against the group, citing records that suggest a commitment to dismantling reproductive rights and challenging birthright citizenship.

Opposition centers heavily on nominees with histories of active litigation against established legal norms. Joshua Divine, for instance, has drawn sharp criticism for his efforts to block student debt relief and his past involvement in legal challenges surrounding the 2020 election and New York state proceedings. Meanwhile, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and Earthjustice Action have urged the Senate to reject nominees they characterize as ideologically driven rather than impartial jurists.

Adding to the tension, the broader confirmation process has been complicated by Attorney General Pam Bondi’s recent move to restrict the American Bar Association’s access to nominee data. Senator Dick Durbin, the committee’s ranking member, labeled the decision a transparent effort to shield unqualified candidates from professional oversight. As the GOP holds a narrow Senate majority, the confirmation path remains a flashpoint for debate over the future of judicial independence.
