YouTube integrates AI shopping tools into conversational search

YouTube is transforming its experimental AI search tool, Ask YouTube, into a dedicated shopping assistant. Unveiled at the Made on YouTube event, the update leverages the platform's custom Gemini model to provide viewers with product comparisons and curated recommendations directly within the watch page interface.

The expansion follows a surge in adoption, with over 140 million users engaging with Ask YouTube during June—a 500% increase since December. Rather than relying on static search results, the feature parses natural language queries to pinpoint specific moments in videos that address complex questions. When users search for products, the AI will now generate structured data, including comparison tables that break down attributes and categories based on individual preferences.

This shift capitalizes on the existing relationship between creators and their audiences, as viewers increasingly treat video content as a primary source for product research and trusted reviews. According to Emily Moxley, VP of Product Management for Viewer AI, the goal is to convert passive browsing into an immediate, actionable connection. By allowing follow-up questions directly on the watch page, YouTube aims to keep users within its ecosystem while they navigate the transition from discovery to purchase.
