The United States is positioning itself as a primary backer of Argentina’s ambitious $51 billion liquefied natural gas initiative, issuing a non-binding term sheet for $6 billion in financing through the Export-Import Bank. This commitment marks a significant boost for President Javier Milei’s push to revitalize national energy infrastructure.
Led by the Argentine energy group YPF in collaboration with Italy’s Eni and the Emirati firm XRG, the project aims to unlock the vast shale gas reserves of the Vaca Muerta formation. The consortium plans to establish an integrated value chain, culminating in two floating liquefaction units offshore Río Negro province with a combined capacity of 12 million tonnes per year. Partners are now seeking entry into Argentina’s Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI) as they work toward a final investment decision slated for late 2026.
