Trump Nominates Project 2025 Architect to Lead Budget Office

Vought, who currently helms the Center for Renewing America, is no stranger to the budget office. He served as its director during Trump’s first term and has since been instrumental in crafting the policy blueprints outlined in Project 2025. While Trump attempted to distance his campaign from the initiative, Vought previously told an undercover journalist that the president-elect remained supportive of their objectives.

Watchdog groups and Democratic lawmakers view the nomination as a definitive link between the incoming administration and the controversial agenda. Tony Carrk, executive director of Accountable.US, noted that Vought oversaw budgets in the previous Trump administration that proposed reductions to Social Security and Medicare. With Vought back at the helm, analysts anticipate a renewed push for spending cuts to offset proposed tax changes.

Beyond traditional budget adjustments, Vought is reportedly exploring strategies to challenge congressional spending authority through impoundment. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) sharply criticized the move, stating that Vought’s appointment reveals the true nature of the administration's policy goals. If implemented, proposals favored by Project 2025 authors—such as raising the retirement age or shifting Medicare toward privatized Advantage plans—could fundamentally alter federal support for millions of Americans.
