Tajikistan’s Energy and Water Resources Ministry has declined to disclose the volume of imports, commercial terms, or the specific transit routes used to navigate the landlocked nation’s supply chain. While Dushanbe has expressed interest in securing up to 2.55 million tons of Iranian crude and refined products annually, officials confirmed that current shipments are modest.
This pivot toward Iran carries significant geopolitical risk. The U.S. Treasury Department maintains strict secondary sanctions on Tehran’s petroleum sector, warning that any entity engaging in such trade risks exclusion from the American financial system. U.S. Treasury spokeswoman Gigi O'Connell stated that those operating in Iran’s oil sector incur risks by choice, though the State Department has not yet signaled specific punitive actions against Tajikistan.
