The initiative follows a broader trend of Indian refiners seeking alternatives to traditional Middle Eastern suppliers. Earlier this year, the Indian Oil Corporation executed its first direct purchase of Ecuadorean crude, a move prompted by the need to replace Russian volumes sidelined by U.S. sanctions on companies like Rosneft and Lukoil. This geographic expansion mirrors India’s recent efforts in Argentina, where a memorandum of understanding signed last year aims to fast-track lithium exploration projects to bolster domestic resource security.
India Eyes Ecuadorean Copper and Crude to Diversify Energy Imports
India is pivoting toward South America to secure its industrial future, opening high-level talks with Ecuador to boost imports of crude oil and critical minerals. Ambassador Fernando Buchelli confirmed plans to invite Indian firms into the nation’s extraction sector, creating a strategic hedge against supply chain volatility and reliance on Chinese markets.

Beyond energy, the partnership seeks to bridge a trade gap by pairing Ecuadorean raw materials with Indian manufacturing capabilities. Ecuador has signaled interest in procuring medical supplies from the state-run HLL Lifecare Limited, potentially turning a simple import arrangement into a multifaceted industrial alliance. As India maintains its status as the world’s third-largest crude importer, these deepened ties with Quito serve to stabilize a supply chain stretched thin by regional conflicts in the Persian Gulf.
