Kyiv Deploys Autonomous AI Turrets to Counter Jet-Powered Drones

Autonomous machine-gun turrets are now patrolling the skies over Kyiv, marking a shift in Ukraine’s air-defense strategy. Designed to intercept low-flying drones, these AI-assisted systems have already recorded their first successful engagements against Russian Geran-5 UAVs, operating with a precision that human gunners struggle to match in high-speed scenarios.

The deployment of these robotic sentries follows a surge in Russian strikes targeting critical infrastructure, particularly bridges and energy sites. According to Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat, the turrets receive targeting data from broader air-defense networks, allowing them to track and neutralize incoming threats during the final, slower stages of flight. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that 12 units are already active in the capital, with eight more planned to bolster the city's defenses.

While the technology offers a robust response to drone swarms, it has sparked safety concerns. Military experts, including Anatoliy Khrapchynskyi, have cautioned that while these systems are programmed for aerial targets, their operation near urban centers necessitates strict adherence to civilian safety protocols. Residents are advised to avoid windows during alerts, a standard precaution that remains critical as automated fire becomes a fixture of the city's defense. Meanwhile, the broader conflict continues to evolve, with Ukraine intensifying its campaign against Russian energy infrastructure and both sides experimenting with increasingly sophisticated, albeit unconventional, defensive measures.
