The discovery arrives as Norway intensifies efforts to maximize output from aging infrastructure. By drilling exploration wells near existing platforms, operators are squeezing additional value from mature assets that reached peak production in the 1990s. The Gullfaks South, Rimfaks, Skinfaks, and Gullveig satellites remain vital, relying on subsea wells tied back to the Gullfaks A and C platforms.
Gunnar Egge, Equinor’s vice president for the field, described the find as a profitable addition that secures ongoing activity levels. For Norway, the strategic objective remains clear: maintaining high export volumes for at least another decade to support European energy security. Since Russian supply lines to the EU were largely severed, Norway has cemented its role as the primary gas supplier to the continent and the UK.
