Automattic Interim CFO Exits Weeks After Boardroom Purge

Jeremy Klaperman has stepped down as Automattic’s interim chief financial officer less than a month after his appointment. His departure follows the chaotic September governance crisis that resulted in the mass resignation of the company’s board and the brief ouster of CEO Matt Mullenweg.

Klaperman’s exit marks another layer of instability at the WordPress parent company. Before his short-lived promotion, he managed finances for Automattic’s VIP Enterprise unit. Sources indicate his departure followed a decision to demote him back to his original position within that division. The company declined to comment on the specific circumstances surrounding his decision to leave.

This leadership churn traces back to a volatile 33-hour window in September when the previous board voted to place Mullenweg on leave. That move triggered a rapid retaliation: Mullenweg resumed control, dismantled the board, and oversaw the departures of former CFO Mark Davies and Chief Legal Officer Andy Missan. A newly appointed board, featuring science-fiction author Hugh Howey and former IRL co-founders Henry Khachatryan and Krutal Desai, now oversees the company. Despite the ongoing executive turnover, Mullenweg maintains that the organization’s financial position remains secure.
