The petition claims the Israeli Medical Association is complicit in violations of medical neutrality, citing the deaths of approximately 1,700 healthcare workers since the October 2023 conflict began. Supporters are calling for a definitive break in institutional ties, mirroring actions taken by medical associations in South Africa, Britain, and Turkey. Dr. Javid Abdelmoneim of Doctors Without Borders emphasized the ongoing detention of professionals like Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, who has been held for over 18 months without charge, and Dr. Mohammed Hassan Ali Obeid, currently detained under the Unlawful Combatant Law.
Global Medical Petition Demands Suspension of Israeli Association
As the World Medical Association meets in the Netherlands, a coalition of 6,500 healthcare workers is demanding the suspension of the Israeli Medical Association. The signatories accuse the organization of failing to uphold ethical standards amid the systematic targeting and detention of medical personnel in Gaza.

Previous attempts to sanction the Israeli group failed, resulting only in a non-binding resolution. Critics argue that years of diplomatic dialogue have fostered a sense of impunity. Jonathan Fluxman, a retired doctor and member of the British Medical Association, urged the WMA to move beyond rhetoric, stating that the protection of medical professionals must be universal to retain its meaning. The WMA General Assembly meeting concludes this Saturday, leaving the organization to face pressure to act on these allegations of professional and human rights failures.
