Transport Minister Steffen Bilger confirmed that the company proposed the name change following discussions last month. Bilger previously criticized the original branding as misleading, arguing that the system remains a driver assistance tool rather than a fully autonomous replacement for human control. With the nomenclature adjusted to reflect the system's operational reality, Bilger now intends to lobby for broader European approval ahead of an upcoming EU-wide vote.
Tesla Rebrands Driver Assistance Software for European Market
Facing mounting pressure from German regulators, Tesla has rebranded its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software to "Tesla Assisted Driving" across Europe. The shift marks a significant strategic pivot for the automaker, which aims to secure continent-wide regulatory approval for its driver assistance technology after years of contentious negotiations with officials.

Elon Musk, who has long lobbied for the technology's adoption in the region, publicly thanked Bilger for the cooperation. The push for European expansion coincides with reports by Reuters alleging that Tesla’s safety claims have relied on flawed internal research. These concerns follow a Dutch regulatory review where officials faced intense lobbying from the company. Despite these hurdles, the software has evolved from simple lane-centering to a complex suite capable of navigating city streets and executing parking maneuvers. However, the system remains under intense scrutiny, with federal investigations and lawsuits probing its role in multiple vehicle crashes and fatalities.
