Cloudflare acquires Deno to evolve its edge computing platform

Cloudflare confirmed its acquisition of Deno on Friday, bringing the startup behind the popular programming runtime into its ecosystem. The deal aims to unify the Workers programming model with Deno’s open-source architecture, signaling a shift toward broader compatibility for developers building applications directly on the company’s global network.

Kenton Varda, principal engineer for Cloudflare Workers, stated that the integration will focus on refining how developers write and deploy software. The move follows Deno’s release of celld, an open-source implementation of Workers that earned praise from the Cloudflare team. Varda dismissed industry speculation regarding vendor lock-in, asserting that providing developers with accessible escape hatches remains a core business strategy.

Deno was co-founded by Node.js creator Ryan Dahl and Bert Belder. Dahl noted that the team intends to establish the Workers model as a mainstream standard for server-side development. While the financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed, Deno previously secured $26 million in funding, including a Series A round led by Sequoia.
