Google Positions Fitbit Edge Between Fitness Tracker and Smartwatch

Priced at $179.99, the newly unveiled Fitbit Edge arrives as a bridge between the slim Fitbit Air and the more robust Pixel Watch. By integrating an OLED display into a compact band, Google aims to offer users advanced navigation and health coaching capabilities without the bulk of a full-scale wearable.

The device leverages Google Health Coach, powered by Gemini, to synthesize fitness and medical data into personalized weekly routines. This functionality requires a Google Health Premium subscription. Beyond standard fitness tracking, the Edge introduces the Health Guardian feature, which monitors long-term health metrics such as blood pressure and insulin resistance indicators first unveiled during the Pixel Watch 5 launch.

Hardware improvements include a built-in GPS reported to be 40% more accurate than previous models and enhanced sleep-stage detection. The wearable supports over 50 exercise modes and automatically logs up to 100 different activities by analyzing movement context. Users can expect up to seven days of battery life and water resistance up to 50 meters.

Preorders are open now via the Google Store, with physical retail availability starting October 27. The device comes in Obsidian, Fog, Olive, and Canyon colorways, alongside a Stephen Curry Special Edition retailing for $219.99.
