WindBorne, founded in 2015, distinguishes itself by feeding empirical sensor readings directly into its own deep-learning forecasting model, WeatherMesh 6. While the total contract value reaches $49 million, the Air Force operates on a pay-as-you-need basis, having committed $1.7 million to date. CTO Andrey Sushko noted the award was granted without competitive bidding, reflecting the government's assessment that no other firm currently offers comparable global data collection capabilities.
WindBorne Secures $49 Million Air Force Weather Data Contract
The U.S. Air Force has tapped Redwood City startup WindBorne Systems for a contract potentially worth $49 million, signaling a shift toward autonomous, balloon-based atmospheric monitoring. The deal grants the military access to proprietary weather data collected by a global fleet of 700 unpowered, AI-navigated balloons.

The startup recently demonstrated its operational reach by maneuvering balloons into the eye of a typhoon—a task achieved by adjusting altitude to catch specific wind currents. This feat highlights the integration of their forecasting models with physical navigation. As AI-driven weather predictions increasingly challenge traditional supercomputer-based simulations, WindBorne’s ability to combine hardware infrastructure with end-to-end learning positions it as a critical player in modern meteorological intelligence.
