GOP Spending Bill Set to Trigger Massive Surge in ICE Funding

Congressional Republicans are moving toward the passage of a sweeping tax and spending package that would deliver a historic financial windfall to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The legislation, championed by President Donald Trump, aims to inject billions into agency operations, sparking fierce backlash from critics over civil liberty concerns.

GOP Spending Bill Set to Trigger Massive Surge in ICE Funding

The Senate initiated a marathon "vote-a-rama" session on Monday, allowing for unlimited amendments to the reconciliation package. The current version, which narrowly cleared a procedural hurdle on Saturday, allocates $29.85 billion to ICE for personnel and technology, alongside $45 billion dedicated to expanding detention capacity. These funds are slated to remain available through September 2029.

Independent analysis suggests the total direct immigration-related funding for fiscal year 2025 could exceed $175 billion. This surge represents an 800% increase in detention funding compared to the previous fiscal year. Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) denounced the proposal on social media, citing the agency’s history of controversial arrests and restricted access to detention facilities. Beyond enforcement, the bill faces criticism for its fiscal impact, with experts at the Center for American Progress characterizing the tax provisions as a massive transfer of wealth from low-income households to the nation's wealthiest earners.
