US Electric Vehicle Market Rebounds After Tax Credit Slump

Electric vehicle sales in the United States have climbed for three consecutive quarters, capturing 6.1% of the total market. This recovery suggests the sector is regaining its momentum following a sharp decline last year, driven by a combination of more competitive pricing and the lingering influence of high gas costs.

The latest data from Cox Automotive indicates that the industry is stabilizing after the cancellation of federal tax credits initially stifled growth. Stephanie Valdez Streaty, director of industry insights at the firm, noted that the current trajectory reflects a market finding its footing again as manufacturers refine their offerings to meet consumer demand.

Toyota, Rivian, and Subaru are currently spearheading this expansion. Toyota’s performance, in particular, saw sales of its bZ and Lexus RZ models double following significant updates to battery capacity, motor power, and charging infrastructure. While Tesla maintains a dominant position by moving more than half of all EVs sold during the third quarter, the company faced a 20% year-over-year decline in sales.

This domestic shift mirrors the trajectory seen in Germany, where the market suffered a massive contraction after government subsidies ended abruptly in late 2023. Much like the current U.S. experience, the German market endured a period of volatility before staging a steady recovery, with recent monthly figures reaching near-record highs.
