Schneider, who assumed leadership in March following Jay Graber’s departure, acknowledged user skepticism regarding corporate influence. He maintains that the platform’s decentralized nature serves as a check on leadership, noting that users retain the ability to migrate to competing applications if new features compromise their experience. The company views this portability as a core accountability mechanism.
Bluesky pivots to payments to challenge ad-driven social models
Bluesky intends to integrate native payment tools within months, marking a strategic shift toward user-driven monetization. CEO Toni Schneider and COO Rose Wang unveiled the plan at TechCrunch Disrupt, aiming to facilitate direct financial support for creators and vendors across the platform’s decentralized ecosystem without relying on traditional advertising.

Drawing on his experience at Automattic, Schneider aims to foster an economy where value flows directly to creators rather than centralized platforms. Wang underscored that Bluesky’s status as a Public Benefit Corporation mandates a mission-first approach, explicitly rejecting the feudal model where dominant social networks act as landlords extracting tariffs from their users. By focusing on the infrastructure layer, the company hopes to build a sustainable revenue model that benefits the ecosystem rather than purely the parent firm.
