Grüüün, a subsidiary of the Münch Energie Group, announced it will cease serving approximately 200,000 residential customers by October 31, 2026. The company, which only launched in 2024, pointed to the government’s pending Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG 2027) overhaul and climbing grid charges as primary drivers for its exit. Simultaneously, Berlin-based Stromee has withdrawn from the market, with local utility SWK Energie GmbH confirming it has absorbed the startup’s remaining power and gas accounts.
German Electricity Startups Collapse Under Price and Policy Pressure
Rising wholesale power costs and shifting renewable energy regulations are forcing German electricity startups to abandon the market. The fallout, echoing the 2022 energy crisis, leaves hundreds of thousands of customers scrambling for new suppliers as the nation enters the winter season with historically low gas storage levels.

The industry instability arrives as Germany struggles with energy security. Gas storage sites were only 60% full as of October 15, trailing the European Union average of 74% and hitting levels not seen since 2011. While major importer VNG maintains that diversified supply routes prevent a physical shortage, the combination of market volatility and regulatory uncertainty remains a severe threat to smaller retail players.
