Ember’s Mug 3 adds physical controls to the smart beverage game

As autumn nights demand warmer drinks, Ember has updated its signature smart mug, aiming to solve the frustration of lukewarm tea. The third-generation Mug 3 introduces on-device temperature controls, removing the mandatory reliance on a smartphone app while maintaining the precise heat management that defined the brand’s original 2016 launch.

The most significant upgrade to the Mug 3 is a physical button on the base that allows users to cycle through five preset temperatures. Starting at 125 degrees Fahrenheit, each press increases the heat by five degrees, topping out at 145 degrees. This adjustment mechanism proves particularly useful for those who prefer to keep their phones in another room while relaxing, though the button’s placement on the bottom requires tilting the vessel—a design choice that feels cumbersome when navigating a full cup of hot liquid.

For those who prefer digital customization, the Ember app remains functional for tailoring specific heat profiles, such as 136 degrees for black coffee or 132 for green tea. Beyond temperature management, the hardware has been refined with a sliding spill-resistant lid and the series' first top-rack dishwasher-safe body. The mug maintains a three-hour battery life and is available in 10-ounce ($129) and 14-ounce ($149) sizes, with the latter offering eight color options. Ember also launched the 16-ounce Tumbler 2, a $179 unit designed with a slimmer profile to fit standard vehicle cup holders, now available via Amazon, Target, and the company's own storefront.
