U.S. Defense Industry Faces Rare Earth Magnet Supply Crunch

America faces a critical shortfall in rare earth magnets, requiring 48,000 metric tons annually while domestic production struggles at a mere 300 tons. With a Pentagon ban on Chinese-sourced materials looming on January 1 and potential export restrictions from Beijing following shortly after, defense contractors are scrambling for alternatives.

U.S. Defense Industry Faces Rare Earth Magnet Supply Crunch

The Pentagon’s impending deadline marks a shift in procurement standards. Previously, rules like DFARS restricted only the final assembly stages of magnet production. Starting January 1, 2027, the mandate covers the entire supply chain, from raw ore extraction to finished components. Defense contractors producing missile guidance systems, drones, and fighter jets must now guarantee that no part of their supply chain touches China, Russia, Iran, or North Korea. An executive order from the White House further complicates this, stripping away the ability to rely on routine waivers or slow domestic qualification processes as excuses for continued reliance on foreign suppliers.

While Washington has funneled billions into mineral companies to bridge this gap, scaling production remains a slow process. Domestic capacity is projected to reach only 5,000 tons by the end of 2026, leaving a massive deficit against current industrial demand. The challenge is particularly acute in the separation of heavy rare earths—a technical process dominated by China. Firms like REalloys are attempting to fill this void by building infrastructure in Saskatchewan and Ohio, though the timeline for commercial delivery remains tight. Major industry players such as RTX Corporation, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, and GE Aerospace, which hold hundreds of billions in combined order backlogs, now find themselves navigating a narrowing window to secure compliant supply chains before the regulatory landscape shifts permanently.
