Ricardo Gonzalez, a US-born former city employee, was riding his electric bicycle near Elm Avenue and 56th Street when federal agents in an unmarked vehicle intercepted him. Witnesses reported that the encounter escalated quickly, with agents allegedly striking and tasing Gonzalez before handcuffing him as he screamed for medical help. The confrontation drew a crowd of neighbors who placed their bodies and trash cans in the path of the agents' vehicles, refusing to let them leave until they provided a warrant.
Local leaders condemned the tactics as a violation of community trust. Congressman Robert Garcia called for an end to what he termed an "illegal deportation machine," while Mayor Rex Richardson insisted that immigration enforcement does not belong in the city’s neighborhoods. Councilmember Tunua Thrash-Ntuk demanded that agents keep their "hands off our people," highlighting the growing frustration over the presence of federal forces in local residential areas.
