Dylan Field balances Figma’s open ecosystem with protocol skepticism

Figma is deepening its commitment to the Model Context Protocol by onboarding 20 new partners, even as co-founder Dylan Field publicly questions the standard's design. During the company’s Config conference in India, Field argued that while the industry pushes for openness, current protocols often favor frontier labs over user security.

The expansion brings major platforms including Notion, Linear, ClickUp, and Mistral into Figma’s AI integration fold. This push comes despite Field’s recent criticism of Anthropic, the creators of MCP, for failing to expose their own cloud resources through the very protocol they champion. Field characterized the ongoing debate between open and closed systems as an oversimplification, noting that it ignores the complexities of asymmetric context sharing.

Figma’s hesitation to fully open its data pipes stems from a focus on risk mitigation. Field acknowledged that while the company aims to foster a flexible ecosystem, MCP remains an imperfect framework with significant room for technical improvement. He emphasized that every additional data point exposed via the protocol increases the potential surface area for abuse, forcing the company to weigh user demand for accessibility against the necessity of platform integrity.
