The referendum results, based on over 1.8 million ballots, saw only 24% of voters support a binding second referendum on independence. Thomas Lukaszuk, leader of the Forever Canadian campaign, framed the result as a clear directive to the international community, declaring, "Don’t mess with Canada." The vote follows months of heightened tensions, during which separatist leaders met with Republican operatives at the U.S. State Department—an engagement British Columbia Premier David Eby labeled as "treason."
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had previously championed the movement, citing Alberta’s status as the holder of the world’s fourth-largest proven oil reserves as a potential "natural partner" for the United States. These overtures coincided with broader trade hostilities from President Donald Trump, who has imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian imports and threatened to annex the country as the "51st state."
