Anthropic Faces Cloud Capacity Crunch Ahead of IPO

Anthropic is struggling to secure sufficient computing power from its primary backers, AWS, Google, and Microsoft. As these tech giants increasingly view the AI startup as a direct competitor, the company faces a precarious reliance on external cloud infrastructure while its own ambitious expansion plans hit significant operational hurdles.

Anthropic Faces Cloud Capacity Crunch Ahead of IPO

Leaked S-1 filing documents reveal that Anthropic expects to spend upwards of $750 billion on cloud contracts. Despite this staggering commitment, the supply remains insufficient. The company is now actively leasing its own data centers and seeking third-party operators, though it remains wary of their limited track records compared to the reliability of established hyperscalers.

Financial strain looms over these expansion efforts. Anthropic reported an $80.7 billion net loss in the first half of the year against $16.3 billion in revenue, with a heavy reliance on just two major customers for roughly 20% of its sales. Furthermore, the company faces potential legal exposure, warning investors that damages from harmful AI behavior could easily eclipse its current insurance coverage. Despite these risks, Anthropic reported third-quarter revenue of $16.8 billion—a 45% increase—as it eyes a public debut in November.
