Founded by Aidan Smith and brothers Asher and Ben Spector, the startup has quickly become a magnet for heavy-hitting venture firms, including Sequoia, GV, and Nvidia. The founders, who have roots in Stanford and the student-run accelerator Prod, are positioning the company as a "young person’s AGI lab." Investors like Sequoia partner David Cahn are betting on their vision to build more efficient systems that avoid the current industry standard of consuming massive swaths of the internet for training.
AI Startup Flapping Airplanes Hits $6 Billion Valuation
Flapping Airplanes, a year-old startup aiming to revolutionize model efficiency, has secured $1 billion in Series A funding. The massive injection of capital, co-led by Index and Lux, pushes the company’s valuation to $6 billion—a fourfold increase since its $180 million seed round just nine months ago.

The core of their ambition lies in a "megakernel" framework designed to maximize GPU utility. By overlapping memory-bound inference with compute-bound training, the software ensures chips remain active rather than waiting for data retrieval. Asher Spector maintains that increasing data efficiency by a millionfold will fundamentally lower the barriers to deploying intelligent systems across the economy. With this fresh $1 billion, the team now faces the challenge of proving that their technical architecture can deliver on these ambitious efficiency claims at scale.
