The report, titled The Long Game: Why Partnership is the New Source of Differentiation, reveals that outsourcing is often a shift in labor rather than a reduction. Nearly half of surveyed advisors—45 percent—reported that their workload remains largely unchanged after moving to external management. Instead of reclaiming time, these firms are pivoting their efforts toward rigorous provider due diligence, governance, and maintaining client communication during volatile market cycles.
Outsourcing Investment Management Does Not Relieve Advisor Duty
Seventy-eight percent of financial advisors acknowledge they remain fully accountable for investment governance and client outcomes, even when utilizing managed portfolio services. New data from Raymond James suggests that delegating portfolio construction does not offload the core fiduciary burden of oversight, suitability, and professional due diligence.

Tom Hawkins, director of business development at Raymond James, emphasized that while portfolio management is delegable, fundamental accountability is not. Advisors are increasingly prioritizing partners who offer substantive support for governance requirements and expertise for client-facing conversations over those who focus solely on raw investment performance. Successful relationships now hinge on the quality of the partnership, as firms continue to act as the primary guardian of the client relationship regardless of the underlying investment structure.
