The situation reached a breaking point as the number of plants operating on critical, three-day stockpiles spiked from 60 in mid-September to 96 this month. According to the Central Electricity Authority, the supply crunch stems from a convergence of surging industrial output and a significant drop in hydropower generation, which has faltered due to erratic rainfall patterns linked to the El Niño phenomenon.
India Hits Record Coal Deliveries to Stave Off Power Shortages
India is now surging 2.6 million tons of coal to its power plants daily, an all-time high intended to pull the nation back from the brink of a widespread energy crisis. This emergency ramp-up follows a sharp depletion of reserves that left nearly 100 power stations with less than three days of fuel.

Daily electricity demand has surged by 45 to 50 gigawatts compared to last year, placing immense strain on the grid. In the industrial hub of Gujarat, factories have already been instructed to curtail evening electricity consumption to prevent potential blackouts. While the Ministry of Coal maintains that domestic production is accelerating, the current delivery record highlights the precarious balance between India's industrial growth and its heavy reliance on coal-fired power.
