The path to a Series A has shifted from standardized metrics to a landscape of high-stakes volatility. Investors Shailendra Singh of Peak XV, Jahanvi Sardana of Index Ventures, and Jenelle Teng Wade of Bessemer described a market where companies often juggle multiple pricing tiers simultaneously to close rounds. Sardana coined this trend “tranchopalooza,” referring to the increasingly common practice of splitting funding into separate, distinct chunks to bridge valuation gaps.
Beyond the structural chaos, the panel emphasized a shift in how firms evaluate potential. While revenue metrics remain relevant, they are often obscured by inflated figures. Singh explicitly warned founders against relying on cumulative ARR charts, labeling them a “massive red flag” that hides poor time-series performance. Despite the pressure, capital remains available for sectors like defense, robotics, and AI infrastructure. Teng Wade pointed to the case of Anthropic, noting that her firm backed the company despite negative margins because they anticipated the sheer scale of the AI market would eventually justify the initial expenditure.
