While Oil India Limited (OIL) has yet to quantify the potential reserves found within the Matsyapuri formation, the company is already pivoting to test adjacent zones for further drilling. This exploration effort aligns with a broader government mandate to reverse three consecutive years of declining domestic crude output.
Oil India Strikes Gas in Krishna-Godavari Basin
State-owned Oil India Limited has tapped into a previously unexplored formation in the shallow Krishna-Godavari Basin, marking a tactical win for the country's energy security. The discovery at the Godavari-1 appraisal well recorded a peak flow of 200,000 standard cubic meters per day, providing a rare positive signal for domestic production.

India, the world’s third-largest crude importer, remains highly sensitive to global supply shocks. Recent volatility in the Strait of Hormuz has amplified the urgency of these local projects, as rising freight costs and energy prices continue to squeeze sectoral margins. To counter these vulnerabilities, the federal government recently launched the National Offshore Exploration Scheme, pledging $8.8 billion in support through 2031 to accelerate the search for viable offshore resources.
