The congressional inquiry follows reports that Meta’s platforms may be disproportionately amplifying content associated with Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, while restricting the outreach of his opponent. The lawmakers emphasized that social media companies carry a fundamental responsibility to ensure equitable distribution and moderation of political content during democratic transitions.
Adding weight to these concerns, the corporate accountability group Ekō recently published findings indicating that Instagram’s algorithm pushed right-leaning content to new, neutral accounts. They have set a November 4 deadline for written responses to their specific questions regarding platform neutrality.
