Russian Satellite Maneuver Sparks Space Conflict Allegations

A Russian military satellite, Kosmos-2612, drifted within 200 meters of a Finnish-operated commercial craft, prompting the United States to formally accuse Moscow of testing on-orbit weapons. The incident, disclosed at a United Nations disarmament committee, has escalated tensions over the militarization of low Earth orbit.

The maneuver targeted ICEYE-X36, a satellite equipped with advanced radar capable of penetrating cloud cover to provide intelligence, which has been under contract with the Ukrainian Defense Ministry since January. Aerospace intelligence firm LeoLabs characterized the movement as a sophisticated rendezvous operation rather than a routine fly-by, noting the proximity was highly irregular.

Brian Hardesty, an adviser to the US delegation, told the UN First Committee that the actions were deliberately reckless and consistent with weapons-testing protocols. While the Russian representative dismissed the allegations as absurd, the exchange underscores a deepening arms race. The situation is further complicated by recent admissions from US officials regarding Washington's own deployment of space-based defensive capabilities, a move that some experts argue simply confirms an existing, long-term shift toward space-based warfare.
