Anu Bharadwaj of Iconiq and Rajeev Dham of Sapphire Ventures joined Superhuman Mail founder Rahul Vohra to dissect the metrics that actually matter. A primary concern involves the inflation of revenue figures. Founders often conflate annualized run rate—which can include fleeting pilot contracts—with true annual recurring revenue. Bharadwaj identified this as a major red flag, noting that investors are increasingly wary of companies that obscure their financial health by counting temporary users as long-term assets.
To cut through the noise, Vohra advocates for tracking engagement alongside revenue. At Superhuman, the team utilized a proprietary metric called "delighted ARR," which isolated income from highly engaged users to measure product stickiness. This focus on qualitative data allows founders to determine if they should refine their current offering or pivot entirely. Vohra suggests that if fewer than 20% of users would be disappointed by losing the product, a complete strategic shift is often necessary.
