Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency, noted that while the world is nearing the 11.2 TW milestone for 2030, the underlying consumption data from the 2023 COP climate summit has proven too conservative. The shift in global lifestyle, characterized by higher heating and cooling requirements, has fundamentally altered the trajectory of electricity needs.
Under the agency's revised 1.5°C Scenario, the roadmap now demands a significantly more aggressive expansion. To maintain alignment with climate goals, renewable capacity must reach 18.4 terawatts by 2035, climbing to 38.2 TW by 2050. This surge would push electricity’s share of global final energy consumption to 35% within the next decade.
