Ports face a mounting energy crisis as they transition to electric cargo-handling equipment and expand shore power services for docked vessels. While only 3% of ports currently offer Onshore Power Supply, the demand for reliable, 24/7 baseload electricity is skyrocketing. Small modular reactors offer a compact solution to replace diesel-reliant infrastructure, potentially insulating ports from grid constraints and volatile energy costs.
Despite the promise, the transition remains in its infancy. Currently, the Russian cargo ship Sevmorput stands as the only commercial vessel utilizing nuclear propulsion. Financial hurdles are significant; a nuclear-powered container ship can cost up to $582 million, nearly five times the price of a conventional fuel-oil vessel. No SMRs are currently powering port infrastructure, though the Port of Corpus Christi has initiated studies to explore the feasibility of these systems.
