Intel Selloff Erases $12 Billion From Government Stake

A 28% plunge in Intel shares on Friday wiped $12 billion from the government’s 10% equity position, a stake accumulated over the past year. The chipmaker’s dismal fourth-quarter outlook triggered a broader industry selloff, forcing investors to confront the reality of stagnant cash flow and rising PC costs.

The market reaction followed Intel’s warning that fourth-quarter revenue will likely land between $15 billion and $16 billion, falling well short of the $17 billion analysts anticipated. Gross margins are projected to contract to 37%, down from 43%, as heavy capital expenditure leaves the company without positive cash flow. CEO Lip-Bu Tan pointed to rising memory prices and component scarcity as the primary drivers behind a cooling PC market, noting that system price hikes are straining corporate IT budgets.

Despite the immediate volatility, the government’s investment remains technically profitable with a 70% gain year-to-date. Intel faces an uphill battle to pivot its manufacturing strategy; while data center revenue surged 78%, the company remains constrained by limited fab capacity. With competition mounting against Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, Intel’s path to recovery rests on scaling its Arizona facilities, though the next major site is not expected to come online until 2028.
