This new wave of innovation is fueled by end-to-end architectures that allow for faster, cheaper deployment of autonomous systems. Unlike the previous generation of AV development, current foundational models excel at generalizing across diverse environments. This shift has lowered the barrier to entry, with many startups now launching with less than $1 million in initial funding. While earlier expectations pointed toward niche applications in construction or mining, a surprising number of new entrants are now positioning themselves as direct robotaxi competitors to industry leaders like Waymo.
The Second Wave: Autonomous Vehicle Startups Surge in 2026
The autonomous vehicle sector is experiencing a resurgence that eclipses the investment frenzy of 2016. According to Trucks VC partner Puneeth Meruva, the firm has already fielded pitches from 81 new startups this year, a two-thirds increase over 2025, driven by the rapid evolution of foundational AI models.

Meruva suggests that the market is no longer a winner-take-all environment. Smaller, specialized firms are finding opportunities to compete on regional levels or specific route types rather than attempting global dominance. As the technical architecture continues to stabilize, Trucks VC anticipates that the pace of new startup formation will accelerate further into next year, signaling a robust and sustained expansion in the autonomous mobility landscape.
