Klein and Glazer Call for Halt on AI IPOs and New Wealth Taxes

Naomi Klein and Ilana Glazer have issued a stark warning regarding the billionaire class, arguing that US policymakers must block upcoming Big Tech initial public offerings and implement aggressive wealth taxes to prevent systemic economic damage fueled by speculative investments and corporate consolidation.

In an op-ed for The Guardian, the pair highlighted that billionaire wealth has surged by an estimated 40% over the last two years, a trend they attribute to unchecked corporate mergers and tax loopholes. They pointed specifically to OpenAI and Anthropic, labeling the potential public offerings of these AI giants as high-risk ventures given the firms' significant debt loads and documented security vulnerabilities. The authors fear that if Nasdaq extends the same regulatory exceptions granted to SpaceX—allowing shares to bypass standard 'seasoning' periods before entering index funds—the market could be forced to absorb unsustainable levels of risk.

Economist Jeffrey D. Sachs has echoed these concerns, arguing that AI companies should not be permitted to monetize technology while simultaneously warning of catastrophic risks to humanity. Sachs advocates for a federal framework of licensing and independent safety evaluations before any such IPOs proceed. Klein and Glazer contend that without intervention, the burden of these speculative failures will inevitably fall on working-class citizens, necessitating a broader shift in economic policy to curb the influence of corporate power.
