Reddit pivots to search ads as AI-driven traffic stalls

Facing a cooling outlook on search traffic and stagnant user numbers, Reddit is launching an experimental ad program within its search results. The platform aims to capitalize on high-intent queries, such as product research, to bolster revenue streams as AI-powered search engines increasingly retain users on their own pages.

The test introduces sponsored content directly into user search queries. For instance, a search for office equipment might trigger advertisements for monitors or desks. Company representatives stated that these placements will rely on contextual relevance, with the initial phase restricted to a select cohort of advertisers. This shift arrives immediately following a lukewarm reception to the firm’s third-quarter results, where revenue forecasts for the final three months of the year fell short of Wall Street estimates.

Reddit’s growth concerns are tied to a decline in traffic referrals from Google, which has moved toward an AI-powered search experience that provides direct answers rather than driving clicks to external sites. With U.S. daily active users dropping to 50.7 million last quarter, the platform is accelerating a transition toward a mandatory logged-in experience. By gating content, Reddit aims to curb unauthorized AI scraping while simultaneously gathering the user data necessary to offer advertisers more precise, and ultimately more lucrative, targeting capabilities.
