Student Mina Abdel-Khalek described the current political climate as deeply disheartening, noting that the public portrayal of her community bears no resemblance to reality. For Aasiya Yaasiin, the environment feels like a regression to a more intolerant era. She stated that she now faces a higher risk of encountering racist incidents in schools and public spaces than she did five years ago.
This climate of fear follows a barrage of attacks on El-Sayed, a progressive Democrat. Third Way, a corporate-aligned think tank, and figures including Rep. Haley Stevens have repeatedly targeted him for his associations and his criticism of U.S. funding for the Israeli military. Meanwhile, Republican figures have escalated the rhetoric; Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz have labeled El-Sayed a “jihadist,” while former Rep. Mike Rogers has baselessly linked the candidate to the Muslim Brotherhood. At a recent event, Robert F. Kennedy suggested that millions of Arabs have contributed nothing to science or literature.
