Instagram is taking Edits beyond phones, launching a Mac desktop version aimed at creators working on more complex short-form videos. The move gives the company a more direct rival to CapCut, ByteDance’s editing app, which has offered desktop versions for Windows and Mac since 2021.
The desktop editor adds a multi-track timeline, keyframes for transitions and audio waveforms for precise cuts. Creators can import their own font files, customize keyboard shortcuts or bring shortcuts over from other editing software. Music, sound and video effects, automatic captions in multiple languages, and styles saved in the mobile app are also available, Instagram said.
Edits supports horizontal and vertical video and can export watermark-free files in 4K resolution. Creators can publish directly to Instagram from the desktop app, with tagging and location features built in, avoiding the need to transfer a desktop edit to a phone for final changes and posting.
“A lot of creators have described the same moment to us: a project gets too big for your phone,” Brett Westervelt, head of Edits, said in a blog post. He described creators managing multiple clips and trying to make precise cuts on a small screen. “Your work is growing, and your tools should grow with it,” he said.
Instagram plans weekly updates to the desktop editor and is working on enabling creators to edit the same project seamlessly across desktop and mobile. The company also said it will continue developing the mobile app, which is used by more than 50 million creators.
