The survey results paint a bleak picture, noting that 61% of Americans now view the economy with pessimism, the lowest level of confidence since December 2023. This dissatisfaction is anchored in the rising cost of living, forcing nearly half of respondents to sacrifice essential spending on food and healthcare. Two-thirds of those polled report they have already curtailed non-essential expenses like dining out and entertainment to manage their tightening budgets.
Rising Fuel Costs Sour American Economic Sentiment
As the United States faces a fresh surge in fuel costs—with national gas prices nearing $4 a gallon—a new CNBC All-America Economic Survey reveals a sharp decline in public optimism, with voters increasingly holding President Donald Trump accountable for the nation's darkening economic horizon.

Public approval of the President’s economic management has cratered, with 60% of voters expressing disapproval. Discontent is even more pronounced regarding the administration’s handling of the conflict with Iran, which 63% of respondents reject. Democratic pollster Jay Campbell observed that temporary fluctuations in gas prices do little to alleviate voter anger, as the cumulative impact of long-term inflation remains a dominant political force. Data from AAA confirms the trend, showing national gas prices at $3.98 per gallon and diesel fuel exceeding $5, marking significant weekly increases. Despite this widespread frustration, the political landscape remains competitive, with Democrats holding only a modest four-point lead in generic congressional polling.
