India’s Economic Momentum Stalls Under Weight of Energy Costs

A sharp rise in global oil prices and tepid private investment have forced economists to downgrade India’s growth outlook for the 2027 fiscal year. A new Reuters survey projects GDP expansion at 6.6%, a significant deceleration from the 7.7% growth recorded in the previous year as external shocks mount.

India’s Economic Momentum Stalls Under Weight of Energy Costs

The Indian economy faces a critical transition as government spending, once the primary engine of development, struggles to offset a broader slowdown. Analysts surveyed between July 21 and 27 warn that headline figures may mask a more fragile reality, with crude price volatility threatening both current accounts and fiscal stability.

Upasana Chachra, chief India economist at Morgan Stanley, notes that firms are increasingly hesitant to commit to large-scale capital expenditure. As demand visibility wanes, businesses are opting to defer expansions, leaving the country’s growth trajectory vulnerable to global headwinds. The International Monetary Fund has echoed these concerns, recently trimming its forecast to 6.4% due to energy pressures. According to Ranil Salgado, the IMF’s resident representative, the dual threat of an expanding Middle East conflict and the El Niño weather phenomenon creates a precarious environment for India’s near-term economic health.
