July civilian death toll hits 2022 high as economic war intensifies

The civilian death toll in Ukraine reached its highest point since April 2022 this July, marking a grim escalation in a conflict that has shifted toward the systematic destruction of logistics and energy infrastructure, threatening to cripple the economic stability of both nations involved.

July civilian death toll hits 2022 high as economic war intensifies

Former Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba warned that the conflict is entering a stage of total economic warfare. While Russia has targeted civilian centers since the invasion began, recent weeks show a calculated shift to neutralize supply chains. Russian forces have targeted petrol stations between Kharkiv and Poltava, while a sustained three-week campaign involving nearly 200 missiles against the port of Odessa has effectively halted export activity. Foreign merchant vessels have ceased arrivals, signaling a collapse in maritime logistics that Kuleba describes as a direct assault on the nation's economic survival.

Despite the severity of the infrastructure strikes, battlefield reports remain volatile. Fighting for Kostiantynivka continues, refuting claims of its fall, and footage alleging a Russian capture of Bilyi Kolodiaz has been flagged as manipulated. As strikes penetrate deeper into the Russian Federation, the reciprocal destruction of refineries and trade hubs ensures that the civilian population faces increasing shortages and supply volatility. Kuleba noted that while food supplies remain secure for now, the systematic targeting of logistics will inevitably disrupt the availability of imported goods, signaling a new, more difficult phase for those living in unoccupied Ukraine.
