Talarico, a Texas state representative, launched his campaign by labeling Paxton the most corrupt politician in the country. His critique centers on Paxton's history of legal troubles, including a past indictment for securities fraud and a 2023 impeachment by the Texas House on charges of abuse of office—though he was ultimately acquitted by the state Senate. Talarico argued that Paxton’s career reflects a broader failure of a political system that rewards self-enrichment over public service.
Financial disclosures and investigative reporting have fueled these attacks. A Wall Street Journal analysis revealed that Paxton’s net worth surged during his tenure as a public official, growing from a modest middle-class income in 2003 to an estimated $5.5 million by 2018. This growth included millions in assets placed in a blind trust and a previously undisclosed $2.2 million gain from a company holding a state contract. U.S. Representative Greg Casar joined the criticism, remarking that comparing Paxton to a common crook downplays the severity of his alleged conduct.
