The administration aims to quadruple U.S. nuclear energy capacity to 400 gigawatts by 2050, a target that necessitates a functional strategy for radioactive waste. Currently, the nation lacks a permanent disposal facility, leaving over 95,000 metric tons of spent fuel distributed across 79 sites in 30 states. With that volume projected to reach 180,000 metric tons as current reactors decommission, the DOE is leveraging billions in capital investment to entice states to support the full fuel cycle, including reprocessing and enrichment.
DOE Selects Five States for Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Hubs
The U.S. Department of Energy has named Utah, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Idaho as potential hosts for Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses. This initiative seeks to incentivize the management of spent nuclear fuel by pairing waste storage with advanced reactor deployment and domestic manufacturing subsidies.

Each campus could trigger up to $50 billion in investment and 25,000 jobs, according to federal estimates. The selection of these five states reflects their existing infrastructure and historical ties to nuclear research, such as the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and the Idaho National Laboratory. By integrating fuel reprocessing with power generation and data center co-location, the DOE hopes to secure a domestic supply chain for high-grade fuel, thereby reducing reliance on foreign enriched uranium while finally tackling the decades-old hurdle of long-term waste disposition.
