Harold Hamm’s Continental Resources Targets Vaca Muerta Expansion

Continental Resources is moving to increase its footprint in Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale play, preparing bids for the province of Neuquén’s largest licensing round in a decade. The U.S. shale giant aims to secure new acreage as the region gains status as a critical, de-risked alternative to Middle Eastern oil supplies.

The upcoming August 19 auction marks a pivotal moment for the basin, with officials offering 15 blocks—more than double the inventory of previous rounds. This expansion follows a broader trend of international interest driven by President Javier Milei’s investor-friendly tax reforms and steady production growth. Continental, which previously acquired stakes in four blocks earlier this year, sees the region as a premier global shale asset. CEO Doug Lawler has emphasized the company’s long-term strategy, noting that the geologic potential of the basin transcends national borders.

Rystad Energy analysts report that Vaca Muerta is now outperforming major U.S. plays like the Permian and Bakken in well productivity. With crude output reaching a record 887,227 barrels per day in May, experts anticipate production will eclipse 1 million barrels per day by the end of the decade. To support this trajectory, significant infrastructure projects are underway, including the Vaca Muerta Oil Sur pipeline and the Argentina LNG initiative, designed to bolster export capacity and solidify the country’s standing as a major energy provider.
