Senate Democrats Demand Concrete Action to Halt Sudan Atrocities

Led by Senator Chris Van Hollen, the caucus letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlights the failure of the current administration to address the RSF’s reliance on external support. The senators, including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Ed Markey, specifically called for a halt to U.S. arms sales to the United Arab Emirates. They argue that the UAE’s continued military backing of the RSF—which includes the training of mercenaries and child soldiers—remains a primary driver of the conflict.

The urgency stems from the deteriorating situation in El Obeid, where the UN reports that drone strikes and the systematic destruction of resources mirror the tactics used during the El Fasher massacre last October. In that siege, more than 6,000 people were killed in just three days, with reports documenting the targeted execution of medical personnel and patients at El-Saudi Hospital. With 14 million people already displaced nationwide, the signatories warn that the administration’s pattern of inaction risks repeating these horrors.

Despite Rubio’s own November 2025 acknowledgment that external support for the RSF must be severed, the senators contend that the U.S. has maintained a "grave failure to act." The letter demands a detailed response by August 17 regarding specific measures the administration will take to prevent further mass atrocities and exert pressure on the actors fueling the violence.
