Khalil was reporting on the ongoing Israeli assault in southern Lebanon when an initial strike forced her to take cover in a nearby house. Israeli forces subsequently struck the building, trapping her and colleague Zeinab Faraj under the debris. While a Red Cross team managed to evacuate a wounded Faraj, the rescue crew itself came under fire, delaying access to the site for hours. Khalil’s body was recovered shortly before midnight, six hours after the initial attack.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the Israeli military for the killing of Al-Akhbar journalist Amal Khalil, calling the strike on her shelter and the subsequent obstruction of rescue efforts a clear-cut war crime that fits a broader, systematic pattern of targeting media professionals in southern Lebanon.
Lebanon's Minister of Information, Paul Morcos, confirmed the death, noting that Khalil is the fourth media worker killed by Israeli forces in the region since March 2. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has joined the condemnation, citing reports that Khalil received direct death threats from the Israel Defense Forces in September 2024. Sara Qudah, CPJ’s regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, stated that the repeated strikes on the same location and the deliberate hindrance of humanitarian access represent a grave breach of international humanitarian law.
