Inertia Enterprises slashes fusion fuel production time to minutes
Fusion startup Inertia Enterprises has developed a method to manufacture fuel pellets in roughly two hours, a process that previously required several days at the National Ignition Facility. By accelerating production, the company aims to clear a critical hurdle in its roadmap toward building a functional commercial power plant.

To achieve this, the team leveraged the scientific foundation laid by chief scientist Annie Kritcher, who previously led the first NIF experiment to achieve a net energy gain. By utilizing a laser system four times more powerful than the NIF hardware, Inertia can tolerate minor imperfections in the pellets, providing the necessary operational margin to speed up crystal growth. The new process completes in minutes what once took a week, significantly lowering the required inventory of expensive, radioactive tritium. With a goal of consuming ten pellets per second in a full-scale plant, this shift toward high-speed manufacturing is central to the company's strategy for economic viability.
